Pipe Fittings

Pipe fittings may not seem like something you really need to worry about at the beginning of your remodeling project. However, when you begin to remodel any room, especially the bathroom, you should be sure that you are familiar with some of the more intricate workings of the plumbing systems in question. Pipe fitting information is crucial to making a bathroom remodeling project go well.

Of course there are all different types of pipe fittings. The one you use depends on what type of pipe you are working with. Some of the more popular ones are: PVC pipe fittings, copper pipe fittings, plastic pip fittings, steel pipe fittings, brass pipe fittings, and cast iron pipe fittings. All of these materials pose their own unique concerns and problems when you are working with them.

The essentials for working with pipe fittings begin with remembering that every material is different. Pipe fittings are what hold two pieces of pipe together. They are used so that pressure inside the pipe does not drop and no leaks are created. This keeps whatever the pipes are carrying – in the case of the bathroom, water – from leaking all over your home. Pipe fittings hold pipes together on their own, but it is a good idea to use a cement or glue to ensure that the pipes do not come apart or leak. Some pipe materials like copper require you to heat the pipe before you glue them into the pipe fittings.

Pipe fitting dimensions depend on what size pipe you are using. Metric pipe fittings are often used in most countries. Pipe fitting in the United States may use inches, but a lot of US companies have started using metric pipe fitting measurements to be compatible with other countries. Pipe fitting sizes are generally slightly larger than the dimensions of the pipe itself, that way the pipe can fit into the pipe fittings.

Surplus pipe fittings can be found, but they are generally in standard sizes. If you have a pipe that fits a surplus PVC pipe fitting, for example, you could save some money on the price of regular fittings. However, some of these discounted pipe fittings are not the best quality, or they are in a size that does not fit your pipe. It may be a good idea to buy pipe fittings that are slightly more expensive but are definitely good quality rather than end up with poor quality pipe fittings. This can lead to major problems and require very expensive repairs.
