Floor Tiles
When you make your decision to retile the floor in your bathroom, you may suddenly feel overwhelmed. What kind of floor tiles should you choose? Ceramic floor tile? Vinyl floor tile? Marble floor tile? Porcelain floor tile? Is self-stick vinyl floor tile really a good idea, or should you give up and hire a contractor to lay the floor tile? These are all answers that can really only be answered by your preferences and your budget, but below are some recommendations.
The type of material you choose to use on your floor is first dictated by your budget. Ceramic floor tiles are a good idea, and are moderately priced, as are vinyl floor tiles. It's true that these are not very elegant, but they are both good floor materials. Another option, rubber floor tiles, is an option but these are normally used for industrial and public buildings. They are very expensive but offer the ease of needing little upkeep.
If you want to lay marble floor tiles, remember that the cost is not only in the materials. You should definitely hire a contractor to lay expensive tiles like these. But before you decide on such expensive materials like marble or granite, keep in mind how heavy the traffic will be in the bathroom in question. Is this your master bathroom where you will be everyday, or a children's bathroom where many different things will be spilled? If so, perhaps marble isn't the best option. However, in a guest bathroom that will not be used frequently, is it worth the cost to lay expensive floor tiles? Again, these decisions are yours to make.
Installing a tile floor may seem like it is something you can handle in an afternoon, but the reality is that it will probably take several days at the least. Bathroom floor tile is especially challenging since it will be subjected to water and soap. But the biggest issue to remember when determining whether or not you need to use a contractor is if you can handle laying out floor tile patterns. Floor tile designs can be very complicated, and the amount and shape of the floor space is incredibly important. Floor tile layout patterns do not always take into account that corner closet or the way the toilet is situated next to the shower. If you have never laid tile before, you may want to hire a contractor with experience laying floor tiles.
